Suzuki Early Childhood Education Birth to Age 3 This a NEW opportunity at this year's Winter Retreat! If you have a baby or toddler between 0-3, we will be having a free class for you! Suzuki Early Childhood Education, often called Suzuki Baby and Toddler builds on musical concepts and instrumental skills laid out in the Suzuki repertoire while the children interact with one another, their parents, and the teachers. Your child will enjoy singing, movement, instrument playing, and listening. Sharing, taking turns, following directions, and pre-literacy activities are part of the class.
The child must be accompanied by an adult.
Orchestra, Books 2 & 3 All string instruments The intermediate orchestra allows string players to build upon techniques from the Suzuki repertoire. The intermediate orchestra is recommended for students in Books 2 and 3. Students will explore rhythms, ensemble skills, and new repertoire!
Orchestra Books 4 and Above All string instruments The advanced orchestra provides a comprehensive ensemble experience and individualized instruction for developing string players. Repertoire is chosen to introduce new techniques and more complicated rhythms, including styles ranging from Baroque to contemporary. The advanced orchestra is recommend for students in Books 4 and above.
Fiddling in D String instruments with a D string from Book 2 through Early Book 3 Learn fiddle tunes by ear! Tunes will be from the American and Irish style of fiddling. Bowing and technique will be discussed and sheet music will be available at the end of the workshop.
Sight-Singing and Dictation All instruments, all ages - for those who have at least a basic knowledge of note-reading. We experience music through our ears and our body. How does that connect to what we see on the page? Students will strengthen their reading skills through listening, singing and then writing what they have experienced. You may bring your instrument, but it is not required.
Improvisation Violinists in Books 3 and Above This class is a hands-on exploration of proven approaches and techniques for the development of creativity in our playing. We will connect improvisation to our Suzuki experience and use games to build layers of improvisation technique. we’ll “think outside the box” inspiring studies of creativity, music theory, composition and musical expression. Students will play with song forms, melodic and harmonic structures, sound effects and free improvisation to create their own performances, or in a word - improvise!

Baroque Workshop for Suzuki Cellists Cellists Book 4 and above Have you ever wondered how Baroque music sounded when it was written or how the cello looked and sounded in the Baroque era? If so, this workshop is for you! Taught by Suzuki cello teachers and Wisconsin Baroque Ensemble musicians Eric Miller and Charlie Rasmussen, this workshop will explore historical performance practice with an emphasis on repertoire found in the Suzuki books. Eric Miller will give a short presentation about the Viola da Gamba and Charlie Rasmussen will show and discuss the Baroque cello and how it is different than the modern cello. The workshop will start with a Baroque bow technique class where you will learn about bowing styles in the Baroque era with scales and Suzuki repertoire. The class will rehearse a Baroque piece to perform on the final concert. There will also be a masterclass emphasizing Baroque style and continuo playing for pieces found in the Suzuki repertoire.
Music Mind Games All instruments and ages Students will play exciting & innovative games designed to help students learn music theory & reading in a very fun way! We'll use colorful and attractive materials designed by Michiko Yurko, a Suzuki piano teacher from Maryland.
Musopoly For students in Books 2 and above All instruments welcome Super FUN board game which cleverly turns mastering all aspects of music theory and reading in to a creative blend of stimulating and fun learning. Players win rhythm "money" and gold coins for answering music questions. A cooperative game-everyone is a winner!

Piano Triolets Pianists will experience the joy of chamber music in a relaxed setting, coached and accompanied by Suzuki teachers playing string accompaniments arranged by Catherine McMichael and Joseph McSpadden. After a rehearsal earlier on Saturday, everyone may choose to play in the Saturday afternoon concert, as well. Teachers must submit pieces to Patty Ladpli by November 15 in order to participate.
